I have never really believed in New Years Resolutions, maybe because I know I normally forget them or give up after a few weeks! So what makes 2019 different? Rather than setting myself a New Years Resolution I have decided to give myself goals instead, I know they may sound like the same thing but here is my thought process. When I think of ‘resolutions’ I have set the following come into my head; “being healthier”, “reading more”, “running more”, “lose some weight”, now in my head these sound great, I know how I want to achieve it but is it really that measurable by the end of the year? Firstly will I even remember them? I might lose some weight, I might drop a pound by December! Is that really an achievement? A goal however is different, it’s measurable. The best definition I could find of the difference between the two surprisingly came from the National Eating Disorders website;
Resolution: a firm decision to do or not to do something. Goal: the object of a person’s ambition or effort; an aim or desired result. … Goals provide a direction to follow to achieve desired outcome. Goals involve intention setting, planning, preparing, and taking REALISTIC action.
So whats my goal in 2019? I am going to run at least 12 races this year and ideally each month of this year. I have already booked January’s (Romsey’s 5 miler) race, now on to planning and researching for the rest of the year. This is the difference, that’s a goal, I am planning which race I am going to enter. I will prepare by training with my Hatch Warren Runner group and I will have 12 medals by the end of the year as a reward for achieving this goal from my action. These 12 medals will be a reminder how much I have achieved in 2019 and how I successfully completed my goal.
So here is the plan so far;
January 27th – Romsey 5 miler
February 24th – Winchester 10k
March 31st – Wokingham 5k
April – Bournemouth 10k
May 9th – Dinton Pastures Series 1 10k
May 12th – Basingstoke 5k
May 19th – Reading 10k
June 13th Dinton Pastures Series 2 10k
July 11th – Dinton Pastures Series 3 10k
August 8th – Dinton Pastures Series 4 10k
So lets crack on and see how many I can do!!
